Do you love Asian take out food?

In my house Asian night is a huge hit, whether it’s Orange Chicken, steak fried rice or Egg rolls, we are all in!! These egg rolls are a guilt free option that you can enjoy!! They are better than takeout and cook in 12 minutes. Would make a great meal for the whole family!

Why you’ll love them!

They are super simple, delicious and if you are using an air fryer they are a healthier option and bonus, these yummy egg rolls are a great budget meal for the whole family. Not only are they healthier they get perfectly crispy on the outside and tender inside without all the extra fat and oil. Serve them with fresh white rice, fried rice or Chow Mein (Chow Mein recipe here).

The Filling.

The egg roll filling is made with ground pork, angel hair coleslaw mix (or freshly sliced cabbage), soy sauce and a simple addition of spices. My family is a little on the pickier side so I make mine simple with less ingredients. For your family the options are endless. You can add green onions, ginger, mushrooms, etc….

Don’t worry if you don’t own an air fryer, you can also bake these egg rolls in the oven. It takes a little bit longer for them to get nice and crispy but it totally works as well. Here’s a link to one similar to mine, air fryer

Why is cooking in the air fryer a healthier option?

Cooking egg rolls in an air fryer can be a healthier option for several reasons:

  1. Less Oil: Traditional deep frying requires submerging the egg rolls in oil, which can significantly increase their calorie and fat content. Air fryers use little to no oil, relying on hot air circulation to crisp up the food, resulting in egg rolls with significantly less fat and fewer calories.
  2. Reduced Saturated Fat: Deep-fried foods often absorb a lot of oil, which can increase their saturated fat content. Air frying reduces the amount of oil used, leading to egg rolls with lower saturated fat levels.
  3. Lower Caloric Intake: By using less oil and reducing overall fat content, air-fried egg rolls typically have fewer calories compared to their deep-fried counterparts.
  4. Healthier Cooking Method: Air frying is considered a healthier cooking method because it doesn’t involve submerging food in oil at high temperatures, which can lead to the formation of harmful compounds like acrylamide. Instead, air fryers cook food by circulating hot air around it, resulting in a crispy texture without the need for excessive oil.
  5. Healthier Ingredients: When making homemade egg rolls, you have control over the ingredients you use. Opting for lean proteins, plenty of vegetables, and whole grain wrappers can further enhance the nutritional profile of the egg rolls.

Ingredients you’ll need.

  • Ground pork:  Or any ground meat you prefer, we just like pork in ours.
  • Vegetable oil spray: Or the spray of your choice
  • Bag of angel hair coleslaw: Or fresh cabbage, thinly sliced.
  • Soy Sauce: This adds flavor to the filling.
  • Seasonings: Garlic salt, salt & pepper.
  • Egg roll wrappers: Thin and crispy wrapping. Any type of egg roll wrapper will work. I use these.
  • Water: just a small bowl, used for sealing the egg rolls like an envelope.

How to cook the egg rolls.

Prepare the filling: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook ground pork until cooked through and crumbly. Drain excess grease and set aside to cool.

Mix in a large bowl the cooled pork and cabbage (here’s where you’ll add any extra ingredients for your filling). Add in the soy sauce, I tend to use around 2 table spoons-ish. Just depends on how much I want to add. Sprinkle the garlic salt, salt and pepper. To your taste and mix well.

Assemble the egg rolls: Place an egg roll wrapper on a flat surface. Add 2 tbsp of filling on the lower half. Fold the center corner over the filling, then fold each side over. Roll the wrapper away from you and seal the ends with water. Repeat for the remaining filling. This recipe makes about 16 egg rolls.

Air fry: Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Place the egg rolls in a single layer onto the air fryer basket. Spray with oil. Cook for 6 minutes, flip, spray again, and cook for 6 more minutes until golden brown. Do it in batches if needed, depending on the size of your air fryer. If your air fryer has trays like mine, start your basket on the bottom rack for the first half, after you flip the egg rolls, place the rack in the top position.

Serve: Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauce and a side of rice.

Ingredients

  • Spray oil (your preference, I use vegetable oil)

  • 10 oz Bag of angel hair coleslaw or 1/2 fresh cabbage thinly sliced

  • 1 to 1 ½ lbs. ground pork sausage (you can substitute any ground meat, we just prefer pork)

  • 2 Tbs Soy sauce

  • Salt, pepper and garlic salt (to taste)

  • Egg roll wraps

  • Small bowl of water

Directions

  • Preheat a frying pan and cook the pork sausage until cooked though and crumbly.
  • Drain the grease from the pork sausage and add to a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the bag of angel hair coleslaw (if using fresh add it now).
  • Sprinkle with 2 Tbs of soy sauce, season with salt, pepper, and garlic salt, and mix well.
  • Lay out an egg roll wrapper and add the sausage and cabbage mixture to the center of the wrap.
  • Fold the center and the two sides one at a time, For the last fold add a little water so the the wrapper will seal like an envelope.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°.
  • Place egg rolls onto your basket and lightly spray with oil. Put in and cook for 12 minutes, (if using an air fryer with trays start in bottom rack position and put to top rack after turning) turning half way and spraying with more oil.
