Why should you clean your walls?

Cleaning walls may not be at the top of everyone’s to-do list, but maintaining clean walls can significantly enhance the appearance and atmosphere of your home and is very satisfying… However, it’s essential to approach wall cleaning with care, as walls can be delicate and sensitive to certain cleaning methods. Today I am going to show you how to safely clean your walls to keep them looking fresh and vibrant

Understanding Your Wall Surfaces.

Before diving into cleaning methods, it’s crucial to understand the type of wall surface you’re dealing with. Common wall surfaces include painted drywall, wallpaper, plaster, and wood paneling. And is important to do this with care so you don’t damage your walls.

Preparation.

Preparation is key to cleaning your walls successfully. Start by removing any furniture or decor near the walls to provide easy access. Next, dust the walls using a soft-bristled brush or a microfiber cloth to remove loose dirt and debris. This step prevents dirt from smudging and scratching the walls during the cleaning process.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Solution.

The choice of cleaning solution depends on the type of wall surface you’re dealing with. For painted walls, a mild cleaner diluted in water is often sufficient, I like to use Pinesol or Fabuloso (it leaves an amazing refreshing smell). You can also use a homemade cleaning solution, recipe below. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can strip the paint or cause discoloration. For wallpaper, it’s best to use a gentle cleaner specifically designed for wallpapered surfaces. Always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of the wall to ensure compatibility and avoid damage.

Tools for Cleaning.

When it comes to cleaning tools, opt for soft and non-abrasive materials to prevent scratching or damaging the walls. Microfiber cloths, soft sponges are excellent choices for effectively removing dirt and stains without harming the surface. Additionally, consider using a step ladder or an extension pole to reach high, you don’t need anything special, I use my Swiffer handle and attach a clean microfiber cloth to the bottom.

Time to Clean.

For painted walls, start by dipping a microfiber cloth into the cleaning solution and gently wiping the walls up and down, but wipe gently. Work in small sections, rinsing the sponge or cloth frequently to prevent dirt buildup. Avoid saturating the walls with excess water, as this can lead to water damage or paint peeling. For stubborn stains, gently dab the affected area with a soft sponge soaked in the cleaning solution, allowing it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing.

Special Considerations.

Certain wall surfaces may require special considerations when cleaning. For example, wood paneling should be cleaned using a mild wood cleaner to preserve its natural finish. Avoid using excessive water, as it can cause warping or swelling of the wood. Additionally, be cautious when cleaning walls near electrical outlets or switches to prevent water damage or electrical hazards.

And Now We’re Done.

Cleaning your walls may seem like a daunting task, but can absolutely be rewarding. Remember to always prioritize safety and test cleaning methods in inconspicuous areas before proceeding. With a little care and attention, your walls will continue to shine for years to come.

Last thing to do is enjoy your fresh clean walls. Onto to the next cleaning chore……
